PhD Forum: A New Platform for International Artistic Research

The PhD Forum marks a historic milestone for artistic research in Italy: the creation of a national platform that brings together the work of the country’s most promising doctoral researchers with projects from across Europe and beyond. As an integral part of Unframing Knowledge: Artistic Research Beyond Theory and Practice, the Forum aims to foster exchange, visibility, and collaboration among emerging scholars and artists engaged in artistic research, while strengthening Italy’s position within an evolving international landscape.

Structured around four thematic sessions – Rethinking Research Methods, AI, Authorship and Critical Literacies, Art, Media and Technology, and Mediterranean Ecologies and Situated Perspectives – the Forum explores key issues in contemporary research, in resonance with the topics addressed in the main academic panels of the conference. This structure enables an ongoing dialogue between established approaches and emerging trajectories, creating common ground for the intersection of theory, practice, and experimentation.

During the Forum, 21 PhD posters will be presented, selected through a rigorous double-blind peer review process ensuring scientific quality and diversity of perspectives. Alongside them, distinguished international guests – scholars and leading figures from doctoral schools and research centers in the field of artistic research – will share their ongoing projects and offer critical reflections on the current state and future directions of the discipline.

Each session will be introduced and moderated by a chairperson, a young researcher who has already achieved professional recognition, tasked with bridging doctoral candidates and speakers to foster a dynamic and inclusive exchange.

The PhD Forum thus stands as a unique opportunity for encounter, dialogue, and growth, enabling doctoral candidates to engage directly with mentors and peers from diverse contexts and contributing to the formation of a vibrant, interdisciplinary, and interconnected community of practice within contemporary artistic research.


UNFRAMING KNOWLEDGE: il PhD Forum è una nuova piattaforma internazionale per la ricerca artistica 

Il PhD Forum segna una tappa storica per la ricerca artistica in Italia: la nascita di una piattaforma nazionale che mette in dialogo i lavori dei più promettenti dottorandi italiani con progetti provenienti da tutta Europa e oltre. Parte integrante di Unframing Knowledge: Artistic ResearchBeyond Theory and Practice, il Forum nasce con l’obiettivo di promuovere lo scambio, la visibilità e la collaborazione tra giovani studiosi e artisti impegnati nella ricerca artistica, rafforzando al contempo la presenza italiana all’interno di un panorama internazionale in rapido mutamento.

Articolato in quattro sessioni tematiche – Rethinking Research Methods, AI, Authorship and Critical Literacies, Art, Media and Technology, Mediterranean Ecologies and SituatedPerspectives – il Forum esplora questioni centrali per la ricerca contemporanea, in risonanza con i temi affrontati nei panel accademici della conferenza principale. Questa struttura favorisce un dialogo continuo tra approcci consolidati ed esperienze emergenti, creando un terreno comune di confronto tra teoria, pratica e sperimentazione.

Durante il Forum saranno presentati 21 poster di dottorato, frutto di un’attenta selezione tramite un processo di double-blind peer review che garantisce qualità scientifica e pluralità di prospettive. A questi si affiancheranno gli interventi di ospiti di rilievo internazionale, studiosi e figure di riferimento provenienti da scuole di dottorato e centri di ricerca dedicati alla ricerca artistica, che offriranno contributi critici sullo stato attuale e sulle direzioni future del settore.

Ogni sessione sarà introdotta e moderata da un chairperson, giovane ricercatore già riconosciuto nel proprio ambito, incaricato di creare ponti tra dottorandi e relatori, stimolando un dialogo dinamico e inclusivo.

Il PhD Forum si configura così come un’occasione unica di incontro, confronto e crescita, dove i dottorandi possono dialogare direttamente con mentori e colleghi provenienti da contesti differenti, contribuendo alla costruzione di una comunità di pratica viva, interdisciplinare e interconnessanel campo della ricerca artistica contemporanea.

Unframing Knowledge: voci, visioni e prospettive della ricerca artistica contemporanea

Oltre cento protagonisti tra artisti, studiosi, filosofi, musicisti e curatori internazionali si riuniranno a Napoli dal 27 al 29 ottobre per Unframing Knowledge. Artistic Research Beyond Theory and Practice, il più ampio convegno internazionale sulla ricerca artistica in Italia, con metodo di selezione double blind peer review, curato e promosso da NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, e organizzato in collaborazione con l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli. 

Il convegno è parte del progetto P+ARTS–Partnership for Artistic Research in Technology and Sustainability, finanziato dall’Unione Europea–NextGenerationEU nell’ambito del PNRR–Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza.

Il programma intreccia keynote lectures, tavole rotonde e sessioni tematiche per esplorare le nuove traiettorie della ricerca artistica nel dialogo tra arti visive, musica, design, cinema e tecnologia. Tra gli ospiti di rilievo, la curatrice Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, il filosofo Emanuele Coccia, il compositore Mauro Lanza, lo studioso norvegese Jørn Mortensen, la regista Antonietta De Lilloe la docente Marilena Maniaci, voci che rappresentano la pluralità dei linguaggi e delle metodologie oggi in campo tra arte, pensiero e scienza.

Le tavole rotonde offriranno momenti di confronto su temi cruciali per il futuro del sistema AFAM e della ricerca artistica in Italia. Da Challenges for AFAM Institutions – moderata da Giuseppe Gaeta – con rappresentanti del MUR e del MIC, a Research, Practice and Exhibition: notes on the italian landscape con Adriana Rispoli e figure chiave del panorama museale e fondazionale; da Perspectives on Artistic Research – guidata da Elisa Poli – fino ad Artistic Higher Educational Institutions and Doctoral Research, coordinata da Vincenzo Estremo, che riflette sulla dimensione dottorale e sulle nuove forme di produzione della conoscenza artistica.

Con 34 relatori selezionati e un vivace PhD Forum aperto al dialogo internazionale, UnframingKnowledge si afferma come un laboratorio di idee, un luogo di convergenza tra teoria e pratica, dove la ricerca artistica si fa strumento di trasformazione culturale e sociale.

Unframing Knowledge: Voices, Visions, and Perspectives in Contemporary Artistic Research


Over one hundred leading figures — including artists, scholars, philosophers, musicians, and international curators — will gather in Naples from 27 to 29 October for Unframing Knowledge. Artistic Research Beyond Theory and Practice, the largest international conference on artistic research ever held in Italy. The event, which adopts a double-blind peer review selection process, is curated and promoted by NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, and organised in collaboration with the Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli.

The conference is part of P+ARTS – Partnership for Artistic Research in Technology and Sustainability, a project funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU within the framework of the PNRR – National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

The programme interweaves keynote lectures, round tables, and thematic sessions to explore new trajectories in artistic research through dialogue among visual arts, music, design, cinema, and technology. Distinguished guests include curator Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, philosopher Emanuele Coccia, composer Mauro Lanza, Norwegian scholar Jørn Mortensen, filmmaker Antonietta De Lillo, and professor Marilena Maniaci — voices that reflect the plurality of languages and methodologies emerging today at the intersection of art, thought, and science.

The round tables will offer opportunities for discussion on key issues shaping the future of the AFAM system and artistic research in Italy. Topics include Challenges for AFAM Institutions, moderated by Giuseppe Gaeta, with representatives from the MUR and MIC; Research, Practice and Exhibition: Notes on the Italian Landscape, featuring Adriana Rispoli and key figures from the museum and foundation sectors; Perspectives on Artistic Research, chaired by Elisa Poli; and Artistic Higher Educational Institutions and Doctoral Research, coordinated by Vincenzo Estremo, which will focus on the doctoral dimension and on emerging forms of artistic knowledge production.

With 34 selected speakers and a vibrant PhD Forum open to international dialogue, Unframing Knowledge establishes itself as a true laboratory of ideas — a space of convergence between theory and practice, where artistic research becomes a tool for cultural and social transformation.

Unframing Knowledge: Artistic Research Beyond Theory and Practice, il primo convegno in Italia sulla Ricerca Artistica condotto attraverso una selezione  double peer review, si articola in sette aree tematiche che esplorano, attraverso prospettive interdisciplinari, le nuove traiettorie della ricerca artistica contemporanea.


Rethinking Research Methods indaga i modi in cui la ricerca artistica genera conoscenza — poetica, concettuale e istituzionale — sperimentando nuovi paradigmi di valutazione e mappatura. Dal ruolo delle pratiche tacite alla ridefinizione dei criteri di “impatto”, il tema interroga le metriche e gli ecosistemi della conoscenza artistica.


Art, Media and Technology esplora le infrastrutture ibride della ricerca, dove vecchi e nuovi media si intrecciano: dalle matrici cibernetiche alle maschere performative, dal teatro virtuale alle simulazioni digitali che mettono in scena la relazione tra corpo, macchina e linguaggio visivo.


Mediterranean Ecologies and Situated Perspectives propone il Mediterraneo come laboratorio di saperi incarnati, reti transnazionali e prospettive femministe. L’ecologia costiera diventa metafora di interconnessione e mobilità culturale, immaginando un network artistico mediterraneo fondato sullo scambio.


AI: Mapping Tools and Critical Deconstruction affronta l’intelligenza artificiale come strumento e oggetto critico: dai processi di “disapprendimento” alle pratiche di resistenza algoritmica, fino all’uso delle piattaforme come spazi politici nella formazione artistica.


AI and Emergent Practices presenta invece un approccio collaborativo tra artista e macchina: l’improvvisazione, la creazione di “doppi digitali” e le forme di co-produzione semantica aprono un campo postumano per la musica e le arti visive.


Exhibiting and Distributing Artistic Research riflette sulle modalità di diffusione della ricerca: dalla visualizzazione dei processi alla riattivazione degli archivi online, fino alle pratiche indipendenti e alle culture DIY che rivendicano una giustizia nella distribuzione del sapere artistico.


Infine, New Ecologies in Artistic Research esplora l’immaginario ecologico contemporaneo: dal disegno architettonico solare alla percezione postumana, dall’ecologia bioacustica alla memoria digitale. Queste “nuove ecologie” ridisegnano il rapporto tra arte, ambiente e tecnologia, invitando a ripensare la sensibilità umana in un orizzonte più-que-umano.

È facile intuire che il convegno sarà il palcoscenico ideale per immaginare come la ricerca artistica possa ridisegnare il futuro!

UNFRAMING KNOWLEDGE – the thematic areas of the conference

Unframing Knowledge: Artistic Research Beyond Theory and Practice, the first conference in Italy on Artistic Research conducted through a double peer-reviewed selection, unfolds across seven thematic areas that explore, through interdisciplinary perspectives, the new trajectories of contemporary artistic research.

Rethinking Research Methods investigates how artistic research generates knowledge—poetic, conceptual, and institutional—by experimenting with new paradigms of evaluation and mapping. From the role of tacit practices to the redefinition of “impact” criteria, this theme interrogates the metrics and ecosystems of artistic knowledge.

Art, Media and Technology explores the hybrid infrastructures of research, where old and new media intertwine: from cybernetic matrices to performative masks, from virtual theatre to digital simulations staging the relationship between body, machine, and visual language.

Mediterranean Ecologies and Situated Perspectives proposes the Mediterranean as a laboratory of embodied knowledge, transnational networks, and feminist perspectives. Coastal ecology becomes a metaphor of interconnection and cultural mobility, envisioning a Mediterranean artistic network grounded in exchange.

AI: Mapping Tools and Critical Deconstruction addresses artificial intelligence both as a tool and as a critical object: from processes of “unlearning” to algorithmic resistance practices, up to the use of platforms as political spaces in artistic training.

AI and Emergent Practices instead presents a collaborative approach between artist and machine: improvisation, the creation of “digital doubles,” and forms of semantic co-production open up a posthuman field for music and the visual arts.

Exhibiting and Distributing Artistic Research reflects on the modalities of dissemination: from process visualization to the reactivation of online archives, from independent practices to DIY cultures that claim justice in the distribution of artistic knowledge.

Finally, New Ecologies in Artistic Research explores the contemporary ecological imagination: from solar architectural design to posthuman perception, from bioacoustic ecology to digital memory. These “new ecologies” redraw the relationship between art, environment, and technology, inviting us to rethink human sensitivity within a more-than-human horizon.
